Learning to Reach Agreement about Managing Resources when there is Disagreement in Law about Who Owns the Resources
In Haida Gwaii, Canada, the Government in Canada and the indigenous people of the Haida Nation fundamentally disagree about who owns the land and all the resources on the land and surrounding waters. The “Title Case” is before the Supreme Court of Canada. In the meantime, over the last 20 years and likely continuing for the foreseeable future, while in the Courts, the two parties are finding unique ways to agree on the fundamentals of good stewardship, co-management and sharing of benefits for both governments to the benefit of all the people who live on Haida Gwaii.
