Thursday, Jan. 18: Introduction to Law & the Life Sciences

  • Jeremy Rifkin, The Biotech Century, Ch. 1 in The Biotech Century (Tarcher Putnam 1998), p. 1-36.  This reading explores developments in biotechnology leading into the 21st century.  As you read, reflect on the relevance of the article to current day controversies and legal issues.  What, if anything, has changed in the last 20 years?
  • Sutton, p. 3 - top of 20 (The Relationship Between Law & Biotechnology).  This reading sets forth basic terms and areas encompassing "biotechnology."  In the first class, we will explore the scope of "life sciences" as closely tied to biotechnology.

In preparation for class, please draft a 1-2 paragraph "statement of interest" addressing your interests in the life science law realm.
