Born in South Korea, Judge Kim immigrated to the United States when he was 11 years old and became a U.S. citizen in college. During his legal career, Judge Kim worked as an assistant public defender for the Cook County Public Defender’s Office, a law clerk for U.S. District Court for Judge Charles R. Norgle, a prosecutor for U.S. States Attorney’s Office, and as a federal administrative judge for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In January 2010, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois appointed him to serve as a United States magistrate judge, making him the first Asian American to join the federal bench in the Seventh Circuit and one of only a few Korean American federal judges in U.S. history.
