Prior to attending law school, Ronnie McKinnon worked as a Registered Nurse in the Neonatal ICU at an academic medical center. While working full time, she attended law school, where she was recipient of two AmJur awards and graduated as Valedictorian of her law school class. After graduation she joined a medical malpractice defense litigation firm where she represented healthcare professionals and hospitals for over eight years. She thereafter joined the Office of University Counsel and served for many years as Hospital Counsel for Patient Safety, Clinical and Regulatory Affairs, at Stony Brook University Medical Center, Stony Brook, Long Island, New York.

Professor McKinnon holds several certifications including: Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM), Certified Patient Safety Officer (CPSO), and Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS). She has been trained as a TeamSTEPPS Advanced Master Trainer, Just Culture Professional, and trained in the Human Factors Analysis Classification System (HFACS), a framework for classifying and analyzing human factors associated with accidents, errors, incidents, harm, and near miss safety events.

Her academic interests in the fields of health law, patient, safety and health care risk management are reflected in her many abstracts that have been accepted for podium and poster presentations at organizations such as National Patient Safety Foundation, University Health System Consortium, the Irish and American Paediatric Society, and the Canadian Patient Safety Institute.
