“Valuing All Identities Beyond the Schoolhouse Gate: The Case for Inclusivity as a Civic Virtue in K–12,” Michigan Journal of Law and Gender (2020)

Increasing social and political polarization in our society has seeped into public schools, forcing administrators and teachers to grapple within tolerance, bias-based bullying, and exclusion, all of which are particularly harmful to LGBTQ youth. This article explores the impact of gender-complex and LGBTQ-inclusive curricula, argues that the benefits of both outweigh alleged burdens on parents’ free exercise of religion and substantive due process rights, and advocates for their adoption in K–12 in the interest of inculcating the civic values upon which our democracy rests.
