Loyola Law - Spring 2012 - page II-1

Dear Graduates and Friends,
A
t Loyola University Chicago School
of Law, we take great pride in
recognizing and nurturing the unique
gifts and talents of our students and
other community members. Loyola students and
alumni have myriad interests and are successful
at a wide range of pursuits, bringing richly diverse
perspectives to the study and practice of law.
This issue celebrates the varied professional
and personal successes of Loyola lawyers. Our
cover story explores the careers of several alumni
who chose to go into business rather than the
traditional practice of law—and the ways that their
Loyola law education is helping them succeed in
commerce. The student profile introduces you to
Elisa Pleasant, creative writer, health care activist,
and lawyer-to-be. James Carey, director of the
Dan K. Webb Center for Advocacy and one of the
law school’s best-loved professors, is retiring this
summer; in our profile of Jamie, students relate his
special gift for getting to know students and helping
them find their own styles.
In these pages, you will also read about the
early successes of the Health Justice Project, which
recently received a generous gift from Curt
(JD ’75) and Linda Rodin; discover the Civitas
ChildLaw Center’s recent accomplishments,
including a $1 million grant and a new online MJ
program; see how international study is getting
students ready for an increasingly global economy;
and learn how the Office of Career Services is
helping job seekers in a tough employment market.
Professor and bioethicist Nadia Sawicki shares
her research on the ways that patients receive
health care information and make decisions
about their treatment, and alumnus Reid Schultz
(JD ’04), general counsel and CAO for MIQ Logistics,
discusses the legal and regulatory complexities
of international trade.
Be sure to check out our Faculty News, Alumni
Update, and Hearsay sections to catch up on what
your professors and classmates are doing, and see
the Save the Date section for upcoming events at
which our graduates are most welcome. We hope to
see you on campus soon!
