LOYOLA UNIVERSITY CHICAGO SCHOOL of LAW - FALL 2014 - page II-1

Dear Graduates and Friends,
I
n
Loyola Law
, we’re always pleased to highlight law
alumni who have devoted their legal careers to
seeking justice for the most vulnerable members
of our communities. In our cover story, you will
read about several alumni working in immigration law
to protect children’s and adults’ rights, influence federal
law and policy, and help applicants fleeing persecution
achieve refugee status.
Our Department Update features Professor Anita
Weinberg (JD ’86), director of the ChildLaw Policy
Institute, who was awarded the Ignatius Loyola Award for
Excellence in Teaching—Loyola University Chicago’s most
prestigious teaching award—at the University’s Faculty
Convocation in September.
Read about two exceptionally talented students: Jon
Sheffield, who has already had five articles accepted for
publication, and Joan Akalaonu, whose varied interests
converge in a commitment to child law. Meet the newest
member of our faculty, Mary Ann Becker. She joined the
law school as associate director of writing programs and
academic support following the departure of Alice Perlin,
who retired this summer after 31 years of dedicated
service to the School of Law.
We are especially proud this year to celebrate the
30th anniversary of our health law program, which has
grown to be one of the most respected in the nation.
Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Michael Kaufman
shares with us his research and expertise in the important
area of early childhood education, and alum Padraig
McCoid (JD ’12) discusses his experiences with limited-
scope representation.
As the School of Law continues to flourish, gaining
momentum and national recognition in several important
areas, we are especially grateful for the tremendous
support we continue to receive from alumni and friends.
In this issue, you will find the 2013-14 Honor Roll of
Donors. Every name on it is a testament to the loyalty and
generosity of a graduate or other supporter of the school.
Thank you for your continuing connection to Loyola and
your dedication to making educational and professional
opportunities available to our students.
