(*) One is reminded of the fiction perpetuated by our secondary school social studies teachers... did you know that Columbus was not trying to convince people that the world was round? Only that its circumference was small enough to complete the proposed voyage. He had so much trouble finding a sponsor because a fairly accurate measurement of the circumference had been known to scientists for centuries! He was wrong, and got extremely lucky to find some land in the Caribbean to land on.
