Students must meet several academic requirements to be admitted into our MS in Applied Statistics program. Here, you'll find a list of requirements and a step-by-step guide to applying to our program for both domestic and international students. Please note that you don't need to finish the complete application in one step; in fact, it is advisable to complete the application is stages.

Academic Requirements for Admission 

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum "B" average in undergraduate coursework.
  • One year of Calculus equivalent to MATH 131 & MATH 132 or MATH 161 & MATH 162
  • One course in Introductory Statistics equivalent to STAT 103, STAT 203 or STAT 335.
  • The General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required for admission.

Students who are lacking the required Calculus 2 and/or Introductory Statistics course(s) are encouraged to take such course(s) at a local community college or online before an admission decision will be made. Students having only the above minimum mathematics requirements are encouraged via to self-study the basics of double integrals, partial derivatives, and matrix operations.

Start the Application Process

The following items are required to apply: 

  1. Application Form. Start your application online by using our online application form.
  2. Personal Statement. We want to know your motivation for continuing your schooling, your career aspirations, and how you believe our program will help you meet your goals. This is submitted through the online application.
  3. Three Letters of Recommendation. With the exception of one letter, letters of recommendation should typically come from academic sources and should highlight the applicant's quantitative skills and achievements. Exceptions can be made for applicants who have been in the workplace for a number of years, but letters should always focus on quantitative expertise and/or promise.
  4. Official General Test scores of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
  5. Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended. An applicant who attended an institution outside the US must submit an ECE transcript evaluation (general evaluation with grade average).

International Students

  1. Official TOEFL (paper) or IBT or IELTS scores. International applicants are required to have earned a score of at least 550 on the TOEFL (paper) examination or 79 on the IBT examination or 6.5 on the IELTS examination.
  2. Translate your foreign transcripts to the US system. Foreign transcripts should be translated over to the US system using either ECE or EP (WES not accepted). The translated GPA must meet the minimum "B" requirement. 

BS/MS 5-year Program

Students pursuing undergraduate studies in the Mathematics and Statistics Department at Loyola are strongly encouraged to apply for the five-year combined BS/MS degree. Learn more about our combined BS/MS programs.
