Undergraduate Colloquium: From CDs to Deep Space

Undergraduate Colloquium: From CDs to Deep Space

Why can you still play a CD even after it is scratched? How does NASA get perfect pictures from Saturn? Join us to examine how error-correcting codes are used in CD/DVD/Blu-ray recording and deep space communications.

This Colloquium will be presented by Dr. Huffman, a foremost leader in the field. He is the author of over 50 research papers in coding theory, group theory, and combinatorics. He is also the co-editor of the two volume research book "Handbook of Coding Theory", co-editor of the research book “Advances in Coding Theory and Cryptography", and co-author of the textbook "Fundamentals of Error-Correcting Codes". According to MathSciNet, his work has been cited by almost 500 different authors.

The Colloquium will be held September 21st, 4:30 PM in Cuneo 311. Refreshments will be served at 4:00 PM.
