Transcript

Usually, I begin my examine by taking three deep breaths …

Well, Lord, I am aware that you were with me and I don’t take your presence for granted.  I am grateful for that and as I look at the gifts of my day, at this half-day, what comes to mind first of all is my gratitude that I have a life at all.  These days I am helping so many people deal with death--and right now,  I have my health. That I have work which I enjoy—that is a good fit.  And such energy to do it. I am so aware that many people of my age have retired years ago.  As I review the day, I’m grateful and happily living this life. I don’t know if this surprises me—maybe I am surprised that I remain calm in the face of so much turmoil.  Like this resident student shared with me—I could receive her anxieties and fears and unsettledness, and it didn’t break my spirit.  Then, as I walked to Starbucks, you enabled me to appreciate the changing leaves and to notice some of the barren branches—the unique shapes which an artist friend enabled me to recognize.  The, at this meeting, I recognized the kindness of my colleague, and you inspired me through it.  Again at the street corner, I saw Sonia and we exchanged concern for her food insecurity.

I ask you to forgive me for my impatience with my colleague who does not seem to understand and appreciate the pastoral dynamics of our situation.  I also I wish I did not judge this student for his seeming self-absorbing practices in the group.  Still, I do judge and I’m sorry.  Help me to mix more understanding in my judgment, and enlighten me from here on, to make better choices--ones which will praise, reverence and serve you more often, and serve others better too.

Keep me mindful that you are with me, and remind me that some really good people of God are with me too.  I’m not in this mess alone. I pray all of this for your greater honor and glory.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, they will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen!
