First-Year Text

Each year, all new students read the same book over the summer as an introduction to academic and student life at Loyola. We hope this shared experience can foster discussion and engagement on important issues during students' first-year at Loyola.

The 2020-2021 First-Year Text is Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen by Jose Antonio VargasThis book is a valuable exploration of issues of immigration and the impact of laws and policies on peoples’ lived experiences in Chicago and around the country. We are excited to share it with you.

Vargas will be the keynote speaker at New Student Convocation on Friday, August 21, where all new students will convene with the Loyola administration, faculty, and staff to officially kickoff their academic experience at Loyola. Immediately following New Student Convocation, students will discuss the text in small groups with a faculty or staff member and a peer leader.

Take a look at the essay Vargas published in The New York Times in 2011 revealing his undocumeted status and a review of his book in The New York Times in 2018.
