The Transfer Experience Learning Community

The Transfer Experience Learning Community is a non-residential community for transfer students at Loyola. Students who participate in Learning Communities report feeling a greater sense of community on-campus, make friends with similar interests that last a life-time, create important connections with faculty, develop more holistically as students, and achieve higher GPAs—plus they have a ton of fun together! Learning Community students connect curricular and co-curricular experiences by taking courses together related to the theme of their community.

In the fall of 2018, students in the Transfer Learning Community will take UNIV 201 together, as well as PHIL 190, a course designed especially for transfer students.

PHIL 190: Loyola's Mission: The Philosophical Vision

Course Description: The course introduces transfer students to the mission of LUC, especially "Transformative Education," by means of the methodology of philosophy. The course is mission-driven, introducing the students to LUC’s vision and its view of the mission that flows from that vision. The course will present that mission holistically: the syllabus is aimed at transmitting LUC’s commitment to ethical behavior, social justice, sustainable living, and global solidarity in their distinctive grounding in the Catholic faith-tradition. It will be instructed by Peter Bergeron on MWF from 12:35-1:25 (section 19, class 3873). 

Learning Outcomes: As a result of completing this course students should be able to:

  • To develop in the student the ability to articulate a personal worldview in relation to the LUC vision.
  • To foster a personal integration in spirituality, global vision, community participation, moral compass, and differentiated understanding of human knowledge that will promote the student’s future promoting of the LUC mission.
  • To promote intellectually open, imaginative, and critical skills and habits of mind.

UNIV 201: Transfer Seminar

Course Description: This course will help you explore what it means to be a successful Loyola student though a small group format to allow you to connect with other transfer students, forge meaningful relationships with your each other and your instructor, and discover how to navigate your undergraduate experiences. You will learn about Loyola’s Jesuit educational traditions, be introduced to the myriad services and activities available on campus, and begin to explore how the city of Chicago will contribute to your experiences. You will learn strategies for academic and personal success in college, and reflect on how to make the most of Loyola University Chicago to shape an undergraduate experience around your unique academic, career, and personal goals.

Learning Outcomes: As a result of completing this course students should be able to:

  • Analyze your academic plan looking forward to graduation.
  • Articulate Loyola’s Jesuit mission and identity.
  • Participate fully in the Loyola Experience curriculum
  • Utilize campus and community resources and support systems.
