Dr. Simerson’s research and scholarly interests include translating evidence into practice and population health with a concentration in smoking cessation, opioid abuse, disaster preparedness, and emergency nursing issues. She completed the DNP in 2016 and conducted a scholarly project entitled “Emergency Nurse Initiated Brief Smoking Cessation Intervention”. Dr. Simerson is also interested in the recent developments surrounding electronic cigarettes and vaping and the concerns that these may serve as gateways for cigarette smoking for young people. The current concern about the “opioid crisis” is of particular interest to Dr. Simerson as prescribed opioid abuse has been recognized in the emergency department as a significant societal and health problem for quite some time. She is currently serving on a local hospital committee looking at multidisciplinary solutions to this growing problem and has been invited to serve on an interdisciplinary panel discussion on the topic of opioid abuse in the Chicago area.

Dr. Simersons’ teaching interests include nurse practitioner primary care management courses, primary care clinical supervision, and skills courses at the graduate school level. She enjoys the challenges of on-line teaching and seeks opportunities to take advantage of her work experience by teaching hands-on skills. Interacting with students regarding clinical experiences is an area of strength as a currently practicing nurse practitioner. Dr. Simerson is responsible for academic advisement and mentoring of scholarly projects for advanced practice nurse students. She has taught MSN 449 Complex Health Problems of Adults/Older Adults, GNUR 517 APN Practicum: Primary Health Care, and GNUR 518L Standardized Patient Lab.
