Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing

Lake Shore Campus, Rogers Park to Health Sciences Campus, Maywood

DATE:  August 25, 2014
TO:  All Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing Students
FROM:  Dr. Keough, Dean - Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing

I am writing in response to a concern brought to me by students regarding the cancellation of the shuttle between Lakeshore Campus (LSC) and Health Science Campus (HSC) two days a week during clinical. When students apply to the Niehoff School of Nursing they are told they must have transportation by the beginning of their Junior year in order to get to and from their various clinical sites as some sites are far from public transportation. This message was communicated during open houses, orientations, and mandatory class meetings, postings on SAKAI and email notices. The Nursing Student Handbook clearly states that it is the student’s responsibility to plan their transportation to and from all clinical sites.

While previously there was a shuttle from LSC to the HSC on clinical days, very few students took advantage of this service. A utilization survey was conducted over the past three years which demonstrated little or no use of the service at a tremendous cost to the School of Nursing. In addition, a large number of students do not have their clinical rotations at the HSC and it is not equitable to provide service to one clinical site and not to the variety of other clinical sites.

One year ago, students and parents were informed that the shuttle services between LSC and HSC would be cancelled beginning with the Fall 2014 Semester on August 25th, 2014. This notice was sent to all Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing students with frequent reminders via e-mail and SAKAI.

There are other transportation options available to all students:

  • Group Carpools
  • I-Go
  • Enterprise & National Car Share Program
  • CTA Public Transportation

Please visit the Loyola University Chicago Campus Transportation website for more details.

We are confident that you will make the appropriate arrangements for all of your clinical agencies.
