  • Dr. Parada is a Professor of Medicine at Loyola's Stritch School of Medicine where he is an active clinician and teacher at Loyola University Medical Center where he works as an infectious diseases specialist. He is also the Medical Director of Loyola's Infection Prevention and Control Program and is dedicated to improving the quality of care and safeguarding patient safety. He joined Hines VA Hospital and Loyola University Chicago after completing a Health Services Research Fellowship at Rush University and Cook County Hospital. He completed a Masters of Public Health at Harvard University and his Infectious Diseases Fellowship at Boston University. His residency training in internal medicine was at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where he was also Chief Medical Resident. Prior to that he completed another general medical-surgery residency, as well as studied at the Lisbon School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene before working in Africa (Angola) for a year. The focus of his research is clinical effectiveness, outcomes, and resource utilization in infectious diseases – with a focus on infection control and the prevention and treatment of healthcare associated infections – including Clostridium difficile and Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), as well as important devise-related infections, such as Central line associated blood stream infections (CLABSIs), catheter related urinary tract infections (CAUTIs), ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAPs) and surgical site infections (SSIs). His projects have included studies of antimicrobial use, antimicrobial resistance and adverse events. His research efforts continue focused on Clostridium difficile-associated disease, the prevention of device-related infections, and MRSA infections. He has over 50 peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals, and over 300 presentations at national and international scientific meetings and Grand Rounds. He is also Research Associate of the Infectious Diseases and Immunology Research Institute (InDIRI) at Loyola University and a Senior Research Associate at the Hines VA Center of Innovation for Complex Chronic Healthcare. He has been honored with membership as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), the Infectious Diseases Society of America (FIDSA), and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (FSHEA). He is also a former VA Research Career Development Awardee. He has twice been awarded the Implementation Science Award by the Association of Professionals of Infection Control (APIC). Dr. Parada mainly sees patients who are hospitalized as part of the infectious diseases consult service at Loyola University Medical Center (LUMC). He also regularly oversees the Infectious Diseases fellow’s clinics in the Loyola Outpatient Center (LOC) on the main Maywood campus. Finally, he sees ambulatory care patients in his own infectious diseases clinics, also at LOC. Dr. Parada has traveled extensively and loves history, arts and architecture. From his father’s side, he is a fluent Portuguese speaker and conversant in Spanish (saying he speaks “Portenhol” – a mix of his near perfect Portuguese from his grandfather with the Espanhol of his grandmother). On his mother’s side he learned to ride horses and row in Ireland, but admits that he never did learn to speak Irish (Gaelic).
