“Diabetes Treatment/Benefit Paradox Exposed By Real-World Data”

Abstract: Improving health outcomes among people living with diabetes requires a patient-centered, equitable, and evidence- based approach to care. Using real-world data on contemporary diabetes management across the United States, Dr. McCoy will present her research examining appropriateness of diabetes therapy, impacts of overtreatment and undertreatment on acute complications of diabetes, and risk profiles of patients most susceptible to these events. She will conclude by discussing potential opportunities for informatics solutions to improve the quality and equity of diabetes care.

About the Speaker: Rozalina McCoy, MD, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN), where she is also a practicing primary care physician and endocrinologist, mentor to clinical and research trainees and faculty, and medical director of Community Paramedicine in the Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service. Dr. McCoy is an NIH-funded health services researcher, whose work focuses on leveraging real-world evidence to improve the quality and equity of diabetes management. This includes secondary analyses of real-world data, pragmatic trials embedded in the primary care infrastructure, quality measurement and improvement, and data science methodologies. Dr. McCoy received her undergraduate degree at Harvard, medical degree at Johns Hopkins, completed her medical training in internal medicine and endocrinology at Mayo Clinic, and has been on faculty at Mayo Clinic since 2015.
