Minutes for the Austin meeting of the Committee on International Education

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 14, 2003. Members and friends present introduced themselves. It was noted that there were international visitors present. The minutes of the summer meeting at Boise were unanimously approved. (Moved: Drenchko, second: Fitzgibbons).

CHAIR'S REPORT:

Report from Area Chairs:

(1) Sessions should contain more physics content (e.g. PTAW)

(2) 2005 is the World Physics Year. Suggestions for meeting topics include:

(a) metric system standard in the USA

(b) environmental issues

(c) contributions of immigrants to (US) physics

Programs I committee meeting announcements were made:

(1) Handouts included future meeting themes and Area Chairs' "Making Connections" document.

(2) Committees should discuss themes for future meetings and organize corresponding sessions and invited speakers.

OLD BUSINESS:

(1) The Chair reported on the morning session at this meeting.

(2) Madison sponsored session: FC - Physics Teaching Around the World, Wed. Aug. 6th.Information on international conferences and Fuller Fund nominations should be sent to G. NEW BUSINESS:

Future meetings:

1. Winter - January 24-28, 2004: Radisson Deauville Resort, Miami Beach, FL.

2. Summer- July 31-August 4, 2004: California State University, Sacramento, CA

3. Winter - January 8-12, 2005: Albuquerque Convention Center, Albuquerque, NM.

4. Summer - July 30-August 3, 2005: Yale University, New Haven, CT

5. Winter - January 21-25, 2006: Egan Convention Center, Anchorage, AK

Nominations for new members of the committee:

The following names were submitted to the AAPT Nominating Committee:

Simon George (replacing B. Preece), D. Gewanter, H. Manos and Peter Hopkinson for committee membership. J. Fitzgibbons mentioned that we should seek future nominees from younger AAPT members who are involved with international activities.

Sessions for the Miami meeting:

1. E. Molto was mentioned as an invited speaker to report on the Cuba conference. A motion was made to apply for $1500 funding through the Bauder committee to provide expenses for his visit as a plenary speaker (motion G. Aubrecht, second J. Fitzgibbons, passed unanimously). This would provide the opportunity to establish connections between AAPT members and Cuban physics teachers.

2. Other invited speakers for this meeting could include Homeyra Sadaghiani of Ohio State University (Physics Education Research).

3. PTAW session was proposed to include invited/contributed talks on the Cuban connections, both in teaching and research.

4. The Women in Physics Committee would like to cosponsor a session on Latin American women in physics (motion J. Fitzgibbons, second, H. Manos, passed unanimously).

Nominations for the Fuller Fund:

The following people have been nominated for Fuller Fund awards: E. Molto (Cuba) and Jesus Ortega. Daniel Lottes (Brazil) was mentioned as an alternate nomination.

IAC Cuba:

H. ManosH.
Manos reported that funding has been received for the IAC meeting in Havana, Cuba. The meeting will be held at the University of Havana from 7-11 July 2003. Announcements have been distributed at this meeting. All information has been posted on the meeting website.
