Margaret Callahan Named Provost of Loyola University Chicago

Dear Faculty and Staff,
I am pleased to share with you that Margaret Callahan, CRNA, PhD, FNAP, FAAN, has agreed to serve up to a two-year term as Provost of Loyola University Chicago.
During the process of assessing the qualifications of external candidates from The Registry and potential internal candidates, we articulated several overarching goals that would be the focus of the academic leader for the next one-to-two years:
- Successfully return our campuses to fully in-person experiences for all students, faculty, and staff
- Work collaboratively with academic and support units across the University to launch the fall semester with heightened attention to the needs of our freshmen and rising sophomores, neither of which have had full on-campus experiences
- Ensure our continuing juniors, seniors, and graduate and professional students return to an even stronger campus community
- Continue to engage the University community as we implement the next steps of our new Strategic Plan and develop important outcome metrics and resource goals
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to our Jesuit mission and its impact on our University community and work
Dr. Callahan, who has served Loyola Chicago and Marquette University in senior academic leadership roles, reached out to indicate her willingness to, again, be of service to our leadership team and University at this important time.
As an alumna of Loyola, Dr. Callahan’s knowledge of and dedication to our University runs deep. She represents more than three decades of higher education experience and an unwavering commitment to our Jesuit mission and all the qualities that distinguish an education at Loyola against the competitive landscape.
Through the past several years, many of you have had the opportunity to work with her in the various roles she has held at Loyola. Her most recent role, prior to sabbatical, was leading the formation of Loyola’s Strategic Plan and actively engaging all stakeholders across our community as part of the planning process, which she initiated in August 2019.
Before this work, she also served as Provost of Health Sciences for four years and as Interim Provost of the University for two years, during which she was instrumental in helping restructure the Office of the Provost to a single-provost model for the University, which remains a core component of our Strategic Plan.
Effective July 1, Dr. Callahan will continue working closely with Vice Provost and Dean Michael Kaufman as he hands off acting provost and chief academic officer responsibilities to her and transitions to his new role as dean of the School of Law at Santa Clara University later this summer. All of us are very grateful to Michael for his exceptional leadership throughout his tenure.
Please join me in expressing appreciation to Dr. Callahan as she pauses her sabbatical and resumes her role leading the Office of the Provost and the Academic Affairs Division.
We are fortunate to have significant depth in academic and administrative leadership at Loyola as we begin implementing our new Strategic Plan and enthusiastically preparing to welcome back students, faculty, and staff for a full return to campus this fall.
