Provost Wiseman Appointed President of Saint Xavier University
I am pleased to share with you that Christine Wiseman, JD, provost, has been selected as the 18th President of Saint Xavier University, an independent, Catholic university founded by the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. With two campuses, located in Chicago and Orland Park, Saint Xavier’s enrollment includes nearly 3,300 undergraduates and more than 2,100 graduate students.
Christine has served as provost since July 2007, and she has provided strong academic leadership. Her tenure at Loyola has been marked by a focus on collaboration, interdisciplinarity, and accessibility. Results include successful negotiations to launch the new School of Communication, a restructured Office of Research Services under the leadership of the Graduate School dean, and a new model for engaging faculty in the selection of interim and permanent deans. In addition, Christine reinstated the Board of Undergraduate Studies as an advisory committee to the provost, and she also instituted annual Faculty Convocations and joint Academic Fora for faculty in Academic Affairs and Health Sciences. Supporting the new Strategic Plan, which Christine actively participated in formulating, joint faculty appointments are being made to the University Centers of Excellence, and faculty hiring has begun anew at the senior ranks. Among the hiring are new endowed professorships and endowed chairs, four of which are now held by women. As an advocate for transformative education rooted in the Catholic intellectual heritage, Christine has been instrumental in advancing the University’s mission with alumni and donor groups.
I am grateful to Christine for her many contributions to Loyola University Chicago as our institution’s chief academic officer. Her experience, track record, and commitment to intellectual inquiry and debate will serve her well in the challenging job of university president. I am confident the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of Saint Xavier University will greatly benefit from Christine’s leadership in the months and years ahead.
Please join me in congratulating Christine, who will be leaving the University mid-spring semester.
Michael J. Garanzini, S.J.
President, Loyola University Chicago
