As a residential campus committed to the education of the whole person, the residential experience is considered an integral part of a student’s education and The Loyola Experience. Research over the past 40 years demonstrates a more productive and more satisfying experience for students who reside in university residence halls than those who live off-campus.

All full-time First-Year and Second-Year students are required to live in Loyola University Chicago Residence Life housing and purchase a meal plan.
If you do not wish to live on-campus and believe that you qualify for an exemption, you must submit your request by February 7, 2018 to give our staff time to review your request prior to the application deadline. Requests for Release from the Meal Plan Requirement may be submitted after Room Selection and prior to the start of the fall term.

Questions? Stop by or call our office in Simpson Hall.
If you currently have an accommodation on file with Services for Students with Disabilities or would like to request an accommodation, please contact their office in early-January to ensure that your records and accommodation are up-to-date and on file prior to the Reapplication + Room Selection Process. Specific information regarding housing and meal plan accommodations is available here.

If you have specific questions regarding your accommodation or how it may affect your application/selection process, one of our Housing Assignments Coordinators would be happy to meet with you and answer your questions.

Please contact Joshua or Melissa to schedule an appointment.

You can get a closer look at our residence halls during Upper Class Area Tours (UPCATs). During UPCATs you'll be able to see building common areas and even some actual rooms. UPCATs is offered on Thursday, February 8, 2018 from 3:30PM-7:00PM on the Lake Shore and Water Tower Campuses.

You may begin your tour at any of the upper class buildings offering a tour. In the interest of sustainability, we have moved to a digital brochure for UPCATS.

Lottery Incentive
You may visit as few or as many halls as you would like. If you tour and have your Student ID scanned by a tour guide at 8 or more halls, you will be automatically entered in a drawing for lottery numbers 1-5.
Based on availability, some Juniors and Seniors may be placed on our Deferred Housing List and will not be able to participate in Room Selection. Students will be notified prior to Room Selection if they are placed on the Deferred Housing List. Additional information regarding the Deferred Housing Process will also be provided at that time.

In compliance with the Residency Requirement, current First Year students are guaranteed on-campus housing for their second year. The need for/use of a Deferred Housing List for Juniors/Seniors does not alter the Residency Requirement for First and Second Year students.

Resources for Students on the Deferred Housing List
If you know that you want to live on-campus, your best course of action is to remain on the Deferred Housing List. Should you choose to explore your off-campus options, the University has several resources to assist you. Visit LUC.edu/offcampus for more information.

If you secure accommodations off-campus or decide that you would like to be removed from the Deferred Housing List, you may submit a Request for Release from the Housing Contract online at forms.LUC.edu/eRelease. If you submitted a prepayment, it will be refunded to the credit/debit card used for payment after your release is approved.

If you would like to update your application and/or roommate preferences, you may do so via the Residence Life Portal after March 12.

Communications
Students placed on the Deferred List will receive regular communications by email from our office. Copies of those communications are available for review below.

Considering Living Off-Campus (Junior/Senior/Graduate Students)
You are not required to live on-campus, however, the Housing Contract is a legally binding agreement and signing the Housing Contract is similar to signing a lease.

Once you have signed the Housing Contract...
...you will not be released if you later decide to live off-campus.
...you will not be released if you are unhappy with your room assignment.
...you will not be released if you also sign a lease off-campus.

The complete terms of the Housing Contract are available on our website.
You should explore all of your housing options before making a final decision.
Juniors/Seniors who move off-campus
must complete an Off-Campus Living Seminar.
Additional information will be provided to affected students after February 14.
Considering an Exemption (Current First Year Students)
Requests for Exemption must be submitted and reviewed prior to signing the Housing Contract. If you wish to pursue an exemption, do not submit an application/contract until you have received a decision from our office regarding your Request for Exemption.

Requests for Exemption submitted in addition to or after a Housing application/contract will be considered a Request for Release, which has different requirements.

Please refer to 'Residency Requirement and Exemption' above.

In order to participate in Room Selection, you must submit your Application and $500.00 Prepayment by February 14, 2018 at 12PM (noon). If you are financially unable to submit a prepayment, you may request a Prepayment Waiver (please see below).

Application/Contract
The application/contract will be available on the Residence Life Portal in LOCUS beginning on February 5, 2018 (typically no later than 5PM). Read the application and contract carefully and be sure to complete all steps.

More information is available under 'Reapplication | Understand the Process' above.

Prepayment
The Prepayment confirms your intention to live on campus. Prepayments must be submitted through the link provided on the Residence Life Portal in LOCUS. Your Application must be submitted before the Prepayment.
Do NOT use the tuition lockbox to submit your prepayment.
Student must sign-in to access the prepayment link.
Prepayments apply to fall housing charges, which will be reflected on July eBills.

Prepayment Waiver Request
Prepayment Waiver Requests may be submitted through the Residence Life Portal in LOCUS beginning on February 5, 2018. Your Application must be submitted before your Prepayment Waiver Request.

Please note that approval of waivers is based on the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) listed on your FAFSA. For the 2018 process the EFC waiver threshold is less than or equal to $5,920.00. Not all waivers are granted; if you submit your request by the deadline and it is denied, you may still be permitted to participate in Room Selection provided that you pay the prepayment as instructed. If you submit a prepayment and are later approved for a waiver, your prepayment will not be refunded; it will be applied as a credit to your fall housing charges on your July eBill.

Questions? Stop by or call our office in Simpson Hall.
Start your Room Selection process by matching roommates. Talk to your friends, roommates, and classmates to determine where you want to live and who you want to live with. We encourage you to come up with a few options in case you're unable to get your first choice. Large roommate groups may need to split up if a large enough apartment is not available at their selection time.

Roommate Groups
Roommate Groups work like a 'friend request', preferred roommate(s) must accept the request to form a group. Invitations/updates will be sent by email any time your roommate group changes. Please note that you will still need to share your roommate PIN with your group in case a large enough space is not available at the time of selection and you need to change the group.

Roommate PIN
When submitting your application, you'll be asked to create a Roommate PIN. You'll need to share this number with your preferred roommate(s) so that they can select a room on your behalf during Room Selection. If you forget your PIN, you may reset it from the Housing Application Portal in LOCUS.

Not sure who to live with?
Talk to students on your floor or in your classes to see if you'd like to live together. You may also go through Room Selection without any preferred roommates; select a room on your own and any empty space(s) will be filled by other student(s).

Not sure where to live?
LEARN MORE ABOUT YOUR LIVING OPTIONS We also encourage you to attend Upper Class Area Tours (UPCATs). See 'Upper Class Area Tours' above.
If you submit your application and prepayment (or waiver) by February 14, 2018 at 12PM (noon), you will be eligible for Room Selection*. All eligible students will be issued a lottery number and selection time on Monday, February 19, 2018 (typically by no later than 5PM).

Lottery numbers are randomly assigned to all eligible students.
*Please note that depending on availability, some Junior/Senior Students may be placed on the Deferred Housing List and will not be able to take part in Room Selection. Students placed on the Deferred Housing List will be notified when lottery numbers are published. Please refer to 'Deferred Housing' above.

Generally speaking, selection dates will be as follows:
  • Current Upper Class Students | Feb 22-23
  • Current First Year Students | Feb 26-Mar 2
Room Selection is completed through the Residence Life page in LOCUS.
Students with an active application can practice Room Selection using the link provided on their Application Status + Tools page.

Plan Ahead with your Roommate(s)
You should communicate with your preferred roommate(s) to determine who has the best lottery number. That student should then be designated to select on behalf of their roommate(s). This person will need to know the room/roommate options you've decided on as a group. They will also need to know the following information for all roommates being "pulled in" during Room Selection in case they need to make any changes:
  • Last Name
  • Loyola ID# (LID)
  • Roommate PIN
  • Meal Plan Preference
Students must submit their Application and Prepayment (or waiver) by the deadline to be eligible to take part in Room Selection, including being "pulled in" as a roommate. You may pull in preferred roommate(s) regardless of their year or assigned lottery number, provided that all roommates are eligible and you have selected a room that fits the group.

Junior/Senior Students who are eligible for Room Selection will not be able to make changes to their Roommate Group during Room Selection. Second Year Students will be able to make changes to their Roommate Groups during Room Selection, but may not pull-in a Junior/Senior.

Questions? Stop by or call our office in Simpson Hall.

Room assignments will be confirmed by Residence Life by late-March.

Any student who was ineligible or chose not to participate in Room Selection will be assigned by Residence Life Staff at the end of the Room Selection process. This includes Rising Second Year Students who do not have an approved exemption and have not applied for housing.

We look forward to having you live on campus for another exciting year. Be sure to communicate with your future roommate(s) about your goals and expectations for the coming year. You may also want to discuss who will be responsible for bringing shared items (if any) like TVs, microwaves, futons, etc.

Planning ahead will help you have an enjoyable living experience.
