Betello, Massimo

About

Massimo Betello is a Roman archaeologist who has excavated pre-Roman, Greek, and Roman sites in Italy and Portugal. In Pompeii he worked with Ca’Foscari University of Venice and co-authored the archeological reports describing their discoveries. He was able to undertake a PhD in the US thanks to a Fulbright Scholarship.

He is vice director of The British Archaeological Project in Grumentum, Italy. His research interests lie in the management of pedestrian traffic in Pompeii, and in the evolution of the Roman city of Grumentum. He has presented the results of these studies at national meetings of the Archeological Institute of America and is writing a chapter about pedestrian movement for a forthcoming book about Pompeii.

For his classes, he has developed an interdisciplinary approach that combines archaeology, history, literature, and art both on-site and in the classroom. He tours Rome with his students and arranges for them to have firsthand experience of archaeological materials held in the collection of the American Academy in Rome.
