Spring 2021 Study Abroad Update
October 2, 2020
Dear JFRC alumni and Rome Center colleagues,
It is with a heavy heart and much sadness that I share with you that a very difficult decision has been made by Loyola University Chicago to continue suspension of all study abroad programs, including the Rome Center, through the spring 2021 semester. We are all saddened by this decision, even as we understand that the safety and security of students, staff, and faculty remain the University's highest priority. Many factors were included in the broad-based decision process, including CDC and US State Department travel restrictions.
Please note that this suspension is temporary. LUC hopes to resume all activity in study abroad and in-person programs at the Rome Center and elsewhere this coming summer 2021 or fall 2021, if it is deemed safe to do so. This has in no way been an easy decision for the University and it is with tremendous sadness that I deliver this message to you. We have made great strides here at the Loyola Rome Center over the past four years, including completion of a new residence hall and chapel on campus, expansion of new programs including the JFRC Global Health Initiative and the JFRC Wellness Center, and we attained capacity of undergraduate enrollments with waiting lists. In my capacity as the JFRC Director, I have every confidence that, once international travel and study abroad is deemed safe, the JFRC will come back roaring and ready to engage a more complex world with sound resources and a focused, disciplined, strategic mission.
I know we all look forward to a bright future for our JFRC students and alumni, to the post-pandemic day, when we will once again thrive at the JFRC. Even as we hear the difficult news about spring 2021, I am confident that the JFRC’s best days are ahead, and that the entire Rome Center community --- students, faculty, staff, friends, and especially alumni --- will rally together to celebrate the 60th founding anniversary of the JFRC in 2022!
In the meantime, let us continue to keep each other in our thoughts and prayers. Pace e Bene! Following, below, is the University’s recent notice about spring 2021 study abroad.
