Malta
January Term Faculty Led Program in Rome and Malta
Program Description
This eleven-day program immerses students directly into the issues facing international refugees that seek asylum in Rome and the Mediterranean island country of Malta. The course begins with 4 days in Rome, where students will meet with the Jesuit Refugee Service staff, visit men’s and women’s shelters, soup kitchens, and offices dedicated to refugee aid. Students will then travel to Malta for 6 days of intensive site visits including the United Nations Refugee Agency, the International Organization for Migration, the General Workers Union, and various NGO’s committed to assisting refugees with legal council, integration into European culture, and work assistance. While in Malta, students will also have the opportunity to directly help refugees by teaching English during the program. This course also includes visits to major sites in Rome, including a New Years Day papal mass at the Vatican, the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain, as well as visits to Malta’s archaeological sights in Valletta (home of the Knights of Malta), the ‘Silent City’ of Mdina, and other historical sights and museums.
