FINE ARTS 342 – ART IN ROME
COURSE SYLLABUS – SPRING SEMSESTER 2014

The course is a study of Rome’s artistic heritage from antiquity to the eighteenth century. This begins with ancient Rome and, as far as possible, follows the sequence through the Early Christian, Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. Selected works of architecture, mosaic, painting, and sculpture are studied within the context of Rome’s long history as the center of a great world empire, as the principal seat of the Catholic Church and Papacy, as the capital of a modern nation state. The study of Rome’s art is implemented through assigned readings and on-site lectures in the city. This, however, is not merely an elaborate guided tour of Rome, but an upper division course in art history. A thorough knowledge of the material is required for examinations.
- An immediate contact with and knowledge and of Rome’s history and rich artistic patrimony which is a microcosm of European art history.
- An introduction to the problems, methods, and terminology of art history, that is, an understanding of art in relation to historical context, the roles of artists and patrons, iconography, and style.
- An enriching and more meaningful experience of life and study abroad.
- You must attend class meetings and take examinations with the section in which you are registered.
- Because of heavy traffic and crowded buses, you should leave the Rome Center more than one hour before the beginning of class. Information on the site and transportation will be posted on LOCUS and on the bulletin board opposite the porter’s desk on the day prior to each class.
- Audio headsets will be handed out at each on-site meeting. Please handle these with care and return them at the end of class.
- Please do not eat, smoke, take photographs or use cell phones during the on-site lectures.

There will be three examinations on dates to be assigned.
- Changes in examination dates are not open to negotiation.
- Absence from an exam without a valid excuse will result in an F (0 points) for the exam. Make-up examinations will not be given for travel-related absences.
- Cheating or dishonesty of any kind on an examination will be penalized
with an F grade.
Presence at class meeting is considered an essential form of participation in an on-site course. Questions and discussion are encouraged both during and after class meetings..
N.B. Twenty percent of the course grade has been assigned for participation. Those absent from two meetings will forfeit five points; those absent from more than two meetings will forfeit all twenty points.
