Innovative Graduate Programs at SCPS

In a strategic move to further its mission of educational access and uphold Jesuit values, Loyola University Chicago's School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) recently unveiled a full suite of graduate programs, positioning itself as a leader in the field. This expansion aligns closely with the University's strategic plan, focusing on interdisciplinary graduate degrees and corporate education to address the evolving needs of the workforce. 

Over the last hundred years, SCPS has successfully served non-traditional, working adult students with accessible undergraduate programs and online learning. Building upon this solid foundation, the school is now shifting its focus to cater to the growing demand for graduate education. The school's strategic plan emphasizes the importance of corporate education, interdisciplinary graduate degrees, and flexible credentialing through stackable certificates, micro-credentials, and non-credit training.

The decision to introduce a variety of Master of Professional Studies (MPS) degrees marks a significant step towards fulfilling this vision. These programs are specifically designed for corporate and working adult learners, offering applied and practical skills tailored to various industries. The inclusion of hands-on learning, capstone projects, and internships ensures that students develop problem-solving, communication, and critical reasoning skills crucial in today's dynamic work environment. 

SCPS's collaboration with other University units and the creation of interdisciplinary programs demonstrate its commitment to enlarging the adult and professional learner population at Loyola. By developing collaborative approaches, the school aims to meet market needs and trends while addressing major challenges of our time. Strengthening internal and external partnerships will be pivotal in this endeavor. 

The strategic plan also emphasizes alignment with the University's goals, particularly in the areas of caring for the whole person and extraordinary academics and research. SCPS is dedicated to recruiting, engaging, retaining, and supporting students, providing equitable financial assistance, and leveraging the strength of distance education and online learning.

When alum Krystal Westmoreland, BA ‘18, MPS ‘23 reflects on her capstone project she shares, “It's almost feels like that Miss Frizzle statement where they take chances making mistakes, getting messy and the capstone class allowed me to do that. It gave me that room to breathe and grow and to dive deeper, not only into the course itself, but also into my career.”
