Jordan Wright

Finding Your Community
Jordan Wright completed her bachelor's in management in the fall of 2022. As an adult who works full-time, she was drawn to SCPS by the flexibility that the fully online Management program offered. Wright works for an EdTech company that runs the nation’s largest online network of independent tutors, and manages the companies’ higher ed partnerships, primarily supporting university stakeholders. “Learning from and interacting with the dedicated SCPS instructors and administrators allowed me to view my professional partners in a new light.” Wright says. Being an LUC student increased her level of admiration and empathy for the work that her partnership stakeholders do in their primary roles as educators/administrators.
One of Wright’s favorite memories was in Dr. Eva Mika’s Strategic Communications course. The interactive exercises she assigned were the most fun – Zoom breakout rooms were brave spaces filled with laughter, vulnerability, and care for each other. Wright got to know many classmates on a deeper level and will always cherish the experience.
Wright’s capstone community partner was “Flambeaux Fit”, a trans/queer-owned CrossFit gym and one of only two gyms focused on LGBTQIA+ individuals in the greater New Orleans metro. Wright’s site supervisor was the owner and lead coach, who as an out member of the trans community, has committed his adult life to LGBTQIA+ causes and advocacy work. Together, they created a sustainable monthly program that provides free foundational health education and inclusive fitness to community members recovering from addiction. When selecting a capstone partner, it was important that Wright found an organization whose great work in the community resonated on a personal level. She says, “As a lesbian/queer identified individual, Flambeaux made perfect sense. Joining their community two years ago was one of the best decisions I ever made. It drastically altered my perception of what I was capable of and inspired me to put my best foot forward in all aspects of my life”.
In early project brainstorms, the owner and Wright discovered that they shared a passion for supporting individuals recovering from addiction. Through their families, the contours of addiction have shaped both of their lives. By approaching this project through the unique lens of their personal experiences, they were able to create an uplifting, safe, compassionate, and brave space for all participants.
Currently, Wright is volunteering with the monthly program she helped create. She also recently completed volunteer orientation at the “New Orleans Mission”, an organization that supports populations in need, including those experiencing addiction, and looks forward to working with them over the coming months.
