Press Release: Announcement of the Provost

December 4. 2019

Fellow Ramblers,

Right before our Thanksgiving break, President Jo Ann Rooney announced that Dr. Norberto Grzywacz will be our next Provost at Loyola University Chicago (LUC). This announcement comes at a moment when LUC is reckoning with our institutional identity and we look towards our future.

The Office of the Provost oversees the academic enterprise of our University, meaning every School and College at LUC, as well as other student facing services like our international programs, the Center for Experiential Learning and Student Academic Services. Recognizing that the Provost plays such a critical role at our University, a Search Committee was assembled 22 months ago to help identify who could best fulfill this role.

Since Spring of 2019, I served as the undergraduate student representative on this committee. Prior to my appointment, Anusha Mannam, former President of the Student Government of Loyola Chicago (SGLC) and Class of 2019, served in this capacity. The Search Committee was comprised of outstanding members of our community from faculty, staff and students. I want to thank all the members of the Search Committee for their work throughout this process, but more importantly, for advocating and believing in LUC’s values of justice, academic excellence, inclusion and our mission rooted in the Jesuit tradition.

Dr. Grzywacz is an outstanding mentor, Professor, and scholar. He has proven to be an academic leader and innovator in finding cross disciplinary solutions to many of the societal issues we face. I am confident that Dr. Grzywacz will be an advocate for all students, champion all academic disciplines and that he will continue to expand on LUC’s mission of positively impacting our communities. Let us all welcome Dr. Grzywacz to LUC!

I would like to take this opportunity to express how appreciative I am of Dr. Margaret Callahan and her work as the Interim Provost. I look forward to the amazing work she will continue to do as the leader of our Strategy and Innovation division. I would also like to thank President Rooney for her leadership, vision and work at LUC. We are heading towards a moment of growth, bold pursuits and academic inquiry. It is, truly, an exciting time to be a Rambler!
