Patricia K. Felkins, PhD, is Associate Professor Emerita in Public Relations and Organizational Communication and the founding Director of the Advertising and Public Relations program in the School of Communication. She also developed the Communication Internship Program and the Capstone in AD/PR. Dr. Felkins was the leader in creating the Advertising and Public Relations Major and the Minor in Organizational and Business Communication. She also established the International Association of Business Communicators Loyola Student Chapter, one of the first student chapters in the nation.
As a senior communication consultant, Dr. Felkins has worked with a variety of organizations including financial, health care, service, manufacturing, and education. Her major areas of teaching and research are in nonprofit and organizational communication, public relations, and community programs.
Dr. Felkins has a global educational focus beginning with the Loyola University Rome Center as a member of the Director’s Advisory Group in Rome and chair of the Rome Center Advisory Committee in Chicago. More recently she has been working in East Africa, where she has collaborated with community groups, schools and universities to develop technology, entrepreneurship, education programs, and community development projects in Kenya. She also established and chaired the Africa Dialogue Group including faculty across Loyola in collaborative research and teaching programs in Africa. She coordinated a global conference Promoting Justice and Peace: University/Community Collaborative Initiatives in Nairobi sponsored by Loyola University Chicago and Catholic University of Eastern Africa. Dr. Felkins also initiated the SOC Africa Project, which established Film for Good with the development of a media lab and donated equipment from SOC, film workshops for students from St. Aloysius High School in the Kibera slums and a student film festival in Nairobi.
She founded the Africa Circle of Hope Foundation (ACOHF) in 2007, which supports development projects for women and children impacted by AIDS and poverty in East Africa. ACOHF provides scholarships for impoverished youth from the slums to attend secondary schools, universities and professional institutes and colleges in Kenya. After retirement from Loyola University Chicago in 2016, Dr. Felkins has been working for ACOHF on educational programs, youth leadership workshops, skill development resources, and professional mentoring networks. She collaborated with regional nonprofits and Kenyan business leaders to create Career Bridge, a program that awards scholarships for professional training institutes and colleges and provides opportunities for high school graduates from the slums to gain job skills leading to productive careers to help them climb out of poverty and create a better future. Dr. Felkins remains committed to building community collaboration and supporting innovative educational programs.
