Professional Development

We offer a variety of opportunities for further professional development, including workshops focused on specific issues or tools and facilitate the fully asynchronous, and self-paced Essentials of Online Teaching Course, which is required by Loyola University Chicago (LUC) for all faculty new to teaching online at LUC. Course activities are designed to help instructors master the skills needed to conduct online courses effectively using the Learning Management System (LMS) and the School of Social Work curriculum. Instructors who successfully complete the course earn a digital badge.  

Essentials of Online Teaching 

This course is designed to help social work instructors create and deliver engaging, high-quality online learning experiences for Loyola University Chicago (LUC) students and teach effectively online as you use the School of Social Work's approved curriculum and infuse it with your own personality and expertise. Design and facilitation frameworks are paired with practical, hands-on course-building assignments to give participants direct experience with Sakai and other LUC educational technologies. The course will explain the reasoning behind the course structure, the principles that guide activities and assignments, standards for assessment and grading, and strategies for creating a lively, engaged online environment as well as getting a close look at Loyola's learning management system (LMS), Sakai.

Instructors who complete this course will be prepared to deliver student-centered, engaging, effective, accessible, and high-quality online learning experiences for synchronous, asynchronous, and hybrid online modalities. Specifically, they will be able to: apply the Quality Matters rubric; identify distance learning requirements related to online interaction and credit hour, demonstrate proficiency in the use of the Learning Management System (LMS), and integrated tools; use rubrics; give helpful assessment feedback; recognize and address issues related to academic integrity and student disengagement; describe course design and facilitation frameworks, create accessible course content and facilitate an online learning environment characterized by instructor presence, community, and clear communication.

Course learning objectives 

After successfully completing this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the processes and strategies that define high-quality online learning experiences.
  2. Summarize the online interaction and credit hour requirements set forth by the U.S. Department of Education.
  3. Practice and demonstrate proficiency in using the Learning Management System (LMS).
  4. Apply the Quality Matters Rubric, including principles of lesson content alignment, resources, instructional strategies, and assessments.
  5. Facilitate online School of Social Work courses effectively, using appropriate tools, technologies, and settings.
  6. Evaluate the accessibility and inclusivity of online learning environments.
  7. Create supplemental course resources that align with learning objectives and meet accessibility standards.
  8. Prepare and facilitate an online learning environment characterized by presence, community, and communication.
  9. Evaluate rubrics that align with course assignments and develop plans to use them to assess students' work.
  10. Provide helpful, constructive, individualized, and timely assessment feedback.
  11. Recognize and address issues related to academic integrity and student disengagement.
