Mission in Action

"I believe that field education is a fundamental and critical aspect of social work pedagogy. The internship experience allows students to work with new populations, in different settings and expands their professional network. It is an opportunity to bridge theory with practice and reflect on both, as students balance traditional classes with field seminar. I see my role as supporting students to make the best of their internship experience. While field can at times be challengng, part of the process is navigating and problem solving difficulties as they arise, being flexible and being open to different experiences!"

Vanessa Farías is an experienced bilingual social worker and earned her MSW from Washington University in St. Louis with a concentration in Adolescent Health and Non-profit management. Originally from Boston, Vanessa has worked with non-profit organizations focused on eliminating barriers to education for young people, young people struggling with homelessness and mixed status families. She is passionate about advocating for her fellow Latino community and pioneering programs and initiatives that empower Latinos and other historically oppressed populations. At Loyola’s School of Social Work, she seeks to help students develop their leadership and advocacy skills in order to gain access to innovative and transformative opportunities in field and beyond.
