Curriculum Update FAQ
2021 Foundation Curriculum Updates
Curriculum is not a static entity. Our faculty leaders constantly monitor best practices that evolve, study workforce needs and patterns of career opportunities, infuse integrated ways of “knowing” as an ongoing iterative process to ensure that our students receive the most transformational learning experience they can get through their studies with us.
Our focus is on helping you pursue your passion. While the “new” specializations may sound different, we are still focused on the core services that a social worker provides in a micro-macro continuum. The “Tracks” add a specific focus to your career goals. For example, “Integrated Practice” is a track in the Micro Specialization that takes into account the complex interplay of health and behavioral health issues impacting different populations like children, adolescents, and adults.
These changes will not affect your enrollment as an evening cohort student. All students can take a combination of modalities: on campus, hybrid, online depending on one’s life situation in any given semester. We understand that “life happens”, hence giving the most flexibility for our students to pursue an education is our goal. The “Mental Health Specialization” choice has become more focused since you can achieve your goals by either undertaking “Integrative Practice”; CADC; Schools; or Migration as your track. All of the tracks handle different populations, and aspects of the broad area of “Mental Health”.
These changes do not affect your focus of study. Please connect with your advisor for more details.
No! Over a period of two years, our exceptional faculty and staff have combed through the competency requirements set by the Council on Social Work Education and arrived at a 49 credit MSW program. Moving away from a “course-based” structure where content was taught in stand-alone courses, they discerned a way to infuse major content in many courses across the curriculum. For example, in the specialized 2nd year curriculum, Research and Policy are not stand-alone courses. Principles and practice of both are infused in multiple courses.
Our tuition is based on a per-credit cost. Hence, a reduced MSW program at 49 credits brings down the cost and makes our rigorous curriculum offerings more affordable and accessible.
Your internship experience will not be affected by this change.
Traditional MSW Program (full-time): 4 semesters (Fall-Spring, Fall-Spring) Summer classes will be available but not required.
Online Bilingual and Evening Program: 8 consecutive semesters (Fall-Spring-Summer, Fall-Spring-Summer, Fall-Spring).
For continuing students taking foundation courses in the summer of 2021 and fall of 2021, a separate message will come from the SSW explaining the plan for students.
