MSW at Carthage College
The Master's of Social Work (MSW), offered by Loyola University Chicago in partnership with Carthage College, offers two paths to completion of the degree. The traditional program, which can be completed in 26 months, and the advanced standing program, which can be completed in 14 months. The traditional program begins in August; the advanced standing program begins in June. The program aims to meet the needs of students preparing to work in the social work field.
The traditional MSW program comprises 60 credits. Students take courses during their first year that focus on foundation generalist social work practice. Along with coursework, students are required to complete an internship and integrative seminar classes. First-year students complete a 500-hour internship and are usually placed at an agency two days a week during normal business hours.
In the second year of the traditional program, the curriculum focuses on a selected specialization, chosen at the beginning of the second year. The second-year internship also focuses on the Clinical Social Work specialization:
- Clinical Social Work: With subspecialties in health, children and families, schools and mental health, the Clinical Social Work advanced practice option prepares students for community mental health, children's services, school social work and social work in health-care settings.
Students are required to complete 720 hours at a specified agency. Students should work out their schedules keeping in mind the needs of the agency.
