This summer 33 social work students and 5 faculty members from Loyola University Chicago and Fordham University in New York studied clinical social work, health policy, and human rights in Rome. Students took classes at Loyola's John Felice Rome Center. Course work was enhanced by field trips to the Roman Forum, Vatican Museum, Pompeii, and Trastevere / Old Jewish Ghetto. The faculty integrated content on treating depression, PTSD, and other disorders, as well as health policy concepts. Professor Jonathan Singer explained,"For example, during our bus trip to Pompeii we had a lively conversation about the relationship between policy and practice in disaster situations. We then toured Pompeii, a city whose inhabitants suffered one of the most famous natural disasters in history. Students agreed the conversation enhanced their experience of the ruined city." When students were not in class they had time to take day trips to the Amalfi coast, Florence, and Venice.
