Faculty-Led Program: ENVS 364/464 in Costa Rica (2020)
Costa Rica is a pioneer in sustainability, protects 25% of its territory, and is a sustainability model for industries around the world. Costa Rica aims to be the first carbon neutral country in the world by 2021. Costa Rica lies in Central America and has coastlines on the Caribbean and Pacific oceans. You will visit a chocolate factory, pineapple plantation, a farm, a nature reserve, coffee plantation, and a shipping company, and you will also hear presentations from local business people and nonprofit executives. The class focuses on learning about management of sustainability in Costa Rica’s businesses, nonprofits, and government. You will have an opportunity to enjoy Costa Rica’s culture and natural environment by visiting local markets, attending local events such as "Toros a la Tica" or Tico style bullfighting (which are rodeo-style bull activities), visiting the rainforest, and participating in optional activities such as canyoning, volcanic mud baths, hot springs, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, tubing, zipline canopy tours, waterfalls, and a natural history hike.
