Faculty-Led Program: HIST 326-201 in Ireland (2020)

This trip will immerse you in Irish history, culture and politics.  You will visit a number of the sites and museums associated with the events that have shaped modern Ireland, particularly the 1916 Easter Rising and the Ulster Troubles. In Dublin you will visit the General Post Office and Museum, where Irish rebels made their last stand during the Easter Rising; the National Museum of Ireland, repository of the foremost collections of Irish history; Kilmainham Gaol, where leaders of the Rising were rounded up and executed; and the Little Museum of Dublin to hear how ordinary Dubliners were impacted by the events of Easter Week.

En-route from Dublin to Belfast, you will visit the Battle of the Boyne site and Museum, where the momentous showdown between King James II and William of Orange was fought, and Newgrange World Heritage Centre, with its Neolithic forts and burial chambers. In Belfast, you will take a walking tour of the city, led by ex-loyalist and IRA prisoners, focusing on the iconic political murals and major sites of the Ulster conflict. You will also visit the Titanic Experience, dedicated to the history of Belfast’s most famous passenger liner, and go on a tour of Crumlin Road Gaol, where most of those involved in the Troubles were incarcerated before trial and prison.
