Faculty-Led Program: LITR 280 in Italy (2020)

The program is organized in collaboration with the non-profit cultural association “Italian Diaspora Studies”, with the patronage of the University of Calabria, Rende (Cosenza), Italy.

Despite the rich history of Southern Italy, which was the center of Magna Graecia and whose inhabitants, the “Itali”, gave their name to the country, still today, undergraduate students from the United States very rarely choose Calabria as the destination for their study abroad programs, possibly because of discrimination – the so-called Southern Question. This is why we have launched a program that promises to be a unique and truly rewarding experience. This three-credit course offers the opportunity for true experiential learning. as students visit a region located in the center of the Mediterranean, less touristic than other areas of Italy, but equally beautiful and rich of natural and artistic treasures. Calabria is also one of Italian regions most affected by emigration toward the US: as a result, millions of Italian Americans have Calabrian origins. Students' understanding of this complex history will be facilitated as they read selections from Italian American and Italian writers while exploring the actual places referenced in their texts.
