Global Sustainability Manager – Grainger
At Grainger, Smith builds and leads implementation of its cohesive global sustainability strategy. He develops sustainable solutions cross-functionally to position Grainger as the MRO leader to customers, employees, investors and other stakeholders. Smith leads and optimizes initiatives that reduce costs and risks, and increase revenues related to materials flows, energy, water, packaging, and so forth, as well as develops appropriate tracking/reporting mechanisms. Smith further collaborates with supply chain leadership on assessment and strategic partnership in sustainable supply chain initiatives and management. He also helps to develop sustainability training modules internally, helps teach sustainability to team members formally through the corporate university, and organizes corporate sustainability engagement mechanisms. Smith also supports Grainger’s customer offering efforts to meet RFP environmental standards, and contributes to Grainger’s performance and reporting related to socially responsible investing platforms.
Smith founded a small sustainable asset management firm, Smith Pierce, LLC, where he created a specialized water portfolio that gained traction with some larger institutions. Through this work he was able to sub-advise for a much larger firm on all environmental, social and governance issues for their clients’ assets under management. Smith holds a MBA in Sustainable Business from Bainbridge Graduate Institute and a MS in Conservation Biology & Ecosystem Management from University of Michigan, where his Master’s opus researched proper valuation of water resources in Brazil.
