Searle Biodiesel Lab - Paid Internship

The School of Environmental Sustainability’s Biodiesel Program is seeking qualified student interns to operate the Biodiesel Program in the Searle Biodiesel Lab. The Biodiesel Program was founded as and continues to be a student-designed, student-driven program. All aspects of the program from biodiesel fuel production and equipment design, to project management and brainstorming are run in part by Loyola students. This opportunity is open to students of every level and from every discipline.

Interns work in a team capacity with other interns to run the day-to day operations of the lab (biodiesel production, oil collection, waste processing), and additionally take a leadership role on projects in the lab (new product development, education outreach, marketing, energy efficiency). Interns will have an opportunity to work in a number of different topic areas: chemistry, product design, business operations, marketing, and research.

Position dates: July 11, 2022 through December 16, 2022

Stein Learning Garden 

The Stein Learning Garden intern will explore a variety of skillsets pertaining to working in an education-based urban agriculture program on the Southside of Chicago. Training topics include garden lesson planning, program delivery, classroom management, how to creatively teach to students with varying learning styles, basic carpentry skills, and more.

The intern will benefit from working alongside professionals with a combined 15 years of experience in the Chicago urban farming/food justice space. The staff is made up of systems thinkers who not only want to grow amazing food, they want to change the way the food system works and bring about a vision where responsibly produced, healthy, and culturally appropriate food is available to all regardless of income level. Interns can expect to leave the program as a skilled changemaker ready to participate in the urban farming movement in Chicago and beyond.

Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum -  Collections Internship 

The Chicago Academy of Sciences / Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum’s (CAS/PNNM) natural history collections are a library of the natural world and are accessed by researchers studying a range of biodiversity topics. CAS/PNNM provides online access to collection data through its online collections management system, Arctos (http://arctos.database.museum). Georeferencing specimen localities helps facilitate greater online use of specimen data by making data points available through searchable map queries. This internship will focus on georeferencing specimen localities for herpetology (reptiles and amphibians) or botanical (plant) records.

Under the supervision of Collections staff, the intern will use online georeferencing tools including GeoLocate and Google Earth to attach latitude and longitude coordinates to specimen locality data. Interns may use physical specimens for verification of locality data or conduct research for historic places.

Environmental Law and Policy Center  

ELPC’s Policy Team seeks an intern interested in being part of one or more of the following projects:

  • Air Quality: Help prepare for the 2022 monitoring season by collecting and testing current equipment, reviewing data, and creating route maps. Research topics such as new monitor technology; other city/state efforts to combat air pollution; local air quality situations; vegetative buffer partnership possibilities; up to date clean equipment; and vehicle options to reduce diesel pollution.
  • Climate Cities: Help assess and develop meaningful connections and partnerships to advance existing, ambitious climate commitments made by Midwest cities. Strong writing and speaking skills required.
  • Wilderness Protection: Help coordinate grassroots efforts towards Wilderness designation for a collection of unique Michigan areas.
  • Electric School buses: Contribute to ongoing efforts to accelerate the adoption of zero emission vehicles.
  • Solar energy: Track solar project development under new Illinois solar programs.

SES Urban Agriculture - Internship

Internships in the SES Urban Agriculture program are aimed at providing a diverse, hands-on learning experience in agricultural production and food systems for LUC students. This is a 4- month long, unpaid Internship with a minimum commitment of 10 hours/week and accepted students can enroll in ENVS 395 to receive 3 credit hours. Student Interns will develop skills and knowledge of aquaponics food production and maintenance, outdoor food production using Organic methods, sales and distribution in local markets, data collection and analysis, pest management practices, plant health and soil fertility, and more. Interns will also have the opportunity to develop and implement an individual project that advances the goals of the Urban Agriculture program.

Position Dates:

  • Summer Session: May 16-August 21, 2022
  • Fall Session: August 22-December 9, 2022

SES Urban Agriculture - Program Assistant  

Program assistants support the Urban Agriculture program goals and lead small teams of students in maintenance and operations of the aquaponics and hydroponics systems, Greenhouse Lab, mycology lab, farmers market, plant sales, and outdoor food production. Student employees will be assigned management level responsibilities in these areas with reporting requirements and weekly meetings. This position is aimed at LUC students with previous experience in food production, current SES Food Systems and Sustainable Agriculture (FSSA) majors, graduate program students, 3rd-4th year undergraduate students, Federal Work Study, and/or students with a high interest in pursuing a career in sustainable agriculture and food systems.

Position Dates: Wednesday, May 4 (orientation) through December 2022.

Chicago Council on Science and Technology

Chicago Council on Science and Technology is a non for profit organization in Chicago that provides live science and sustainability programs throughout neighborhoods in Chicago, to raise awareness about how science helps society, and provide interesting lectures on current issues like Covid-19, climate change, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies. Relevant experts are sourced from private companies, community organizations, museums, laboratories, and universities (including LUC, which has provided many content experts to give these talks in communities).

Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum -  Animal Husbandry

This Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (PNNM) internship involves working with three species, the Blanding’s Turtle, the Smooth Green Snake and the Wood Frog. The Chicago Academy of Sciences is currently involved in conservation projects with these three species. The position will involve learning and conducting best husbandry techniques for animals that are going to be released into the wild. This will include feeding, cleaning, and handling. 

The ideal candidate must have an interest, or better yet, experience in conservation and working with reptiles and amphibians. They should be able to deal with the unexpected and be able to adjust quickly and should be able to work as a team member and an individual. Use of a car would be advantageous.

Office of Sustainability - Paid Internship

Interested in Campus Sustainability? Looking for a way to help move Loyola’s sustainability mission forward? Excited to get back to campus and engage your fellow Ramblers?

Consider applying for one of the positions listed below.

  • Graduate Sustainability Intern– Support the Office of Sustainability by supervising undergraduate students, partnering on research, and engaging community partners. Lead communications and outreach through web and email channels. Anticipated work of 10-12 hours per week.
  • Campus Sustainability Interns– Develop and implement Campus Sustainability projects on the Lake Shore, Water Tower and Health Science Campuses. Lead on projects including No Impact Meals, Energy and Water Audits, engagement weeks such as Energy and WaterWeek, and support new sustainability programs and events as they develop. Anticipated work of 8-12 hours per week.

Office of Sustainability - Energy Audit Paid Internships

The Office of Sustainability is supporting the Facilities Department and our consulting engineers in collecting information for energy use and efficiency at the Water Tower and Health Science Campuses. We are hiring 2-4 students for 8-15 hours per week from February 1 through mid-April, 2022. Priority will be given to students eligible for Federal Work Study.

The Delta Institute is a nonprofit organization formed in 1998 that works in partnership with business, government and communities in the Great Lakes region to create and implement innovative, market-driven solutions. Depending on the specifics of the individual intern, interns provide a variety of different services in areas like writing and content development for social media and web platforms, and providing support for events, fundraising initiatives, and project communications. Delta values the diverse perspectives our interns bring to our work, and interns are invited to our staff meetings and any relevant project meetings during their internship.

Glenwood Sunday Market Paid Internship

Two Glenwood Market internship positions will be available for the Summer/Fall 2022 semesters with the Rogers Park Business Alliance. Internship start date is June 1 and the end date is October 25, 10-15 hours per week, at a rate of $15 per hour. SES Undergraduate Research Journal Student Editor
The School of Environmental Sustainability (SES) is establishing an internal, peer-reviewed undergraduate research journal. This journal will highlight SES student research supported by internal and external scholarships (i.e. Carbon Fellowships, LUROPs), review papers, and technical reports. We are seeking a highly motivated SES student to be the lead student editor for the journal. The successful candidate will be expected to manage e-mail communications, solicit student and faculty reviewers, organize research submissions, and format manuscripts.

This position will be a great experience for students contemplating graduate school
and/or a research career. The expectations of the position would be a one academic year (Fall 2019-Spring 2020) commitment.
