There are many opportunities for students to get involved with IES in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. Hiring timing is based on the timeline further down on this page. The following are more detailed descriptions of individual internship opportunities currently available:

Environmental Law and Policy Center

The Environmental Law and Policy Center (ELPC) Air Quality team is seeking 1-2 interns from Loyola who are interested in improving Chicago’s air quality. Depending on each intern’s skills s/he will:

  • Monitor air quality in various Chicago neighborhoods through guided routes with ELPC/community partners or independently;
  • Take notes and photos/videos regarding air pollution sources observed while in the field;
  • Participate in air quality oriented community service such as tree planting;
  • Analyze data;
  • Assist with creating and presenting monitoring results’ presentations;
  • Help tracking/troubleshooting/replacing monitors/phones throughout the city.

Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum -  Collections Internship

The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum’s (PNNM) collections contain approximately 290,000 specimens and artifacts collected from the 1830s to the present. The Spring 2019 Intern, under the supervision of Collections staff, will use online georeferencing tools including GeoLocate and Google Earth to attach latitude and longitude coordinates to specimen locality data, beginning with specimen records in malacology (mollusks). By the end of the internship, the intern will have georeferenced specimens in CAS/PNNM’s malacology collection, thereby improving the accessibility to these specimens for research.

Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum -  Animal Husbandry

This Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (PNNM) internship involves working with three species, the Blanding’s Turtle, the Smooth Green Snake and the Wood Frog. The Chicago Academy of Sciences is currently involved in conservation projects with these three species. The position will involve learning and conducting best husbandry techniques for animals that are going to be released into the wild. This will include feeding, cleaning, and handling. 

The ideal candidate must have an interest, or better yet, experience in conservation and working with reptiles and amphibians. They should be able to deal with the unexpected and be able to adjust quickly and should be able to work as a team member and an individual. Use of a car would be advantageous.

Delta Institute Internship

The Delta Institute is a nonprofit organization formed in 1998 that works in partnership with business, government and communities in the Great Lakes region to create and implement innovative, market-driven solutions. Delta works to build environmental resilience, economic vitality, and healthy communities. You can learn more about the Delta Institute at www.delta-institute.org.

Depending on the specifics of the individual intern, interns provide a variety of different services in areas like writing and content development for social media and web platforms, and providing support for events, fundraising initiatives, and project communications. Delta values the diverse perspectives our interns bring to our work, and interns are invited to our staff meetings and any relevant project meetings during their internship.

IES Undergraduate Research Journal Student Editor
The Institute of Environmental Sustainability (IES) is establishing an internal, peer-reviewed undergraduate research journal. This journal will highlight IES student research supported by internal and external scholarships (i.e. Carbon Fellowships, LUROPs), review papers, and technical reports. We are seeking a highly motivated IES student to be the lead student editor for the journal. The successful candidate will be expected to manage e-mail communications, solicit student and faculty reviewers, organize research submissions, and format manuscripts.

This position will be a great experience for students contemplating graduate school
and/or a research career. The expectations of the position would be a one academic year (Fall 2019-Spring 2020) commitment.
