While not always recognized as a factor in migration, gender influences reasons for migrating, such as who migrates and to where, the networks they use, opportunities and resources available during migration, and relations with an immigrant's country of origin.

The online Certificate in Gender Studies and Migration for Social Justice at Loyola University Chicago challenges the idea that sex and gender are fixed categories and removed from migratory experiences.

In this one-of-a-kind program, you will learn about the factors that affect all aspects of the migration process, including the roles, expectations, and power dynamics associated with gender and sexual identity and expression. You will discover the importance of challenging power structures associated with migration and learn how to advocate for immigrants, refugees, and displaced individuals.

Program Structure

The online Certificate in Gender Studies and Migration for Social Justice is a part-time, fully online program offered in collaboration with the School of Social Work. It can be completed in two semesters or in one summer session and one semester.

Using an intersectional lens, the program challenges you to examine the influence of gendered agency, racial and sexual discrimination, and sexual identity on migratory experiences.

You can complete Loyola's migration and gender studies certificate program on the schedule that works for you. The certificate program is offered completely online and can be finished in just two semesters.

You will learn to analyze the ways in which gender justice is connected to larger social, economic, political, and cultural forces. You will also explore contemporary social justice concerns around migration.
