LEGAL BRIEFS
T
he School of Law’s
National Security and Civil
Rights Program hosted
its inaugural symposium
in February. “National Security Law,
Policy, and Practice: Are We Safer in
2014 and at What Cost?” examined
the current state of the constitutional
security and liberty equilibrium,
including ongoing developments in
the Edward Snowden and National
Security Agency revelations; the role
of Article III courts; and the economic,
political, and moral implications of
this debate. Distinguished panelists
included former United States
Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, and
a luncheon address by Anthony
Romero, executive director of the
American Civil Liberties Union.
Under the leadership of Professor
John Dehn and well-known Chicago
trial lawyers and School of Law
adjunct faculty members Thomas
A. Durkin and Joseph Ferguson, the
National Security and Civil Rights
Program was launched to foster a
nonpartisan understanding of the
burgeoning legal intersection of
national security and civil liberties in
the US. Law students in the program
may participate in a variety of unique
clinical and networking activities,
including practica and externships
with prominent attorneys who have
expertise in national security-related
issues and litigation.
Panelists Mary Ellen O’Connell and former United States Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald (center), with moderator Professor John Dehn, discussed
counterterrorism operations and prosecutions at the inaugural National Security and Civil Rights Symposium.
Law alumni who currently serve or have served in state, local, or federal courts posed for a group photograph at the Judges’ Reception on February 25.
