WILLIAM BRANDT JR.’S leadership paved the way for the Stritch School of Medicine to become the first medical school in the country to openly accept students with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status.

“What makes DACA students great doctors is that they are a qualified group of applicants who are bilingual, bicultural, resilient and who can help diversify the U.S. physician workforce,” says Mark Kuczewski, professor of medical ethics, and director of the Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics, Stritch School of Medicine.

Brandt, who died in May at 73, chaired the Illinois Finance Authority (IFA) and was a Loyola trustee. In 2013, the IFA created a loan program to help DACA students finance their medical education.

Brandt said creating the loan program was his proudest career achievement. And for the 38 DACA recipients who have earned Stritch medical degrees, Brandt’s vision helped them begin valuable medical careers.

MARTY NORVILLE, former Loyola men’s basketball player and longtime university supporter, died in September. He was 83.

“Marty was a true Loyola man and he will be missed by Ramblers everywhere,” says Director of Athletics Steve Watson.

Norville, the brother of Loyola Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Al Norville, played basketball for Loyola from 1959-61, and helped the program to a 15-8 record as a junior during the 1960- 61 season.

A member of De LaSalle High School’s inaugural Hall of Fame Class, Norville went on to have a long and successful professional career in sales before starting Shoreline Aggregate and becoming a major player in road construction across Chicago, Indiana and Michigan.
