Mass

What is a Missioning Mass?

A Missioning Mass is a Eucharistic celebration in which the Provincial Superior of the Society of Jesus officially confers a blessing that carries responsibility and authority over an official work of the Jesuits. In Dr. Reed's case, the Provincial of the Chicago Midwest USA Province is missioning him to be the "Director of the Apostolic Work" of Loyola University Chicago. Since it is the Provincial Superior who enables Loyola University Chicago to call itself "Jesuit," this Mass is the formal recognition that the Society of Jesus entrusts him with the leadership of an apostolate under their sponsorship.

Is there a reception after the Missioning Mass?

Yes, a post-Mass reception will be held in the atrium of the Damen Student Center immediately following the Mass. All are invited to enjoy some light snacks and refreshments at this reception.

Procession

If it rains or snows heavily on Thursday, November 3, the Inaugural Procession will be canceled. Everyone is invited to proceed directly into the Gentile Arena for the Installation Ceremony which will begin at 2 p.m.

The Installation Ceremony will include an Academic Procession by University delegates from across the country, including Loyola faculty, as well as a color guard, musical performances, formal greetings by key institutional constituencies, and a keynote address by Dr. Reed.

Are there assigned seats for the Installation Ceremony in Gentile Arena?

Loyola administrators, faculty and institutional delegates who will participate in the Academic Procession will have reserved seats near the stage in the Gentile Arena. All other seats will be open, and everyone is invited to sit wherever they would like for the Installation Ceremony.

The Inauguration Ceremony is expected to last around 60 minutes.
