Video: Level 1
A level one (1) competency badge in "Video" from Digital Media Services will encourage users to review the process of identifying equipment, theory, production, post-production and sharing of digital-format video. This track contains twenty-one courses, including optional courses, that review both hardware and software required for working with video.
Upon completing the Capstone module, clients are requested to send their completed resources to digitalmediaservices@luc.edu for review and competency endorsement.
Additional course and competency level options will be made available throughout the semester.
Objectives
Individuals receiving a comptency endorsement in Video from Digital Media Services will:
- Develop an understanding of, and be able to, execute a digital video production process;
- Identify and select appropriate equipment for an upcoming video project;
- Create a checklist for the handling of equipment while on-location;
- Determine the accurate video format for their project;
- Review best practices for asset management for Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere;
- Compare non-linear editing applications and their capabilities;
- Share a video project that was created in the course sequence; and
- Identify and implement video composition basics, such as: timing, transitions and titling.

V100: Pre-Production 
In the "Pre-Production" course, Digital Media Services will address traditional script formats, standard short hand notations, storyboarding, preparing shot lists and organization before asset gathering. Optional activities include reviewing script templates, examples and comparisons of shot types.
V110: Selecting Appropriate Equipment 
In the "Selecting Appropriate Equipment" course, Digital Media Services will address common equipment types, focusing on video-capable cameras and including microphones. Participants will have insight on selecting cameras and other equipment for their projects.
V120: Composition Theory
In the "Composition" course, Digital Media Services will address the basics of video composition: shot framing, timing, use of transitions and titles, and how to avoid mistakes in continuity such as jump cuts. Participants will also learn what composition choices can confuse their audience.
V130: Production and Asset Gathering 
In the "Production and Asset Gathering" course, Digital Media Services will address the fundamentals of using pre-production materials while at a video shoot, as well as how to avoid damaging equipment and staying attentive of mistakes in continuity.
V140: Post Production and File Handling 
In the "Post Production and File Handling" course, Digital Media Services will address the process of transferring footage from video camera to computer, providing a set of recommendations for footage backup and initial editing program set up.
V150: Video Editing 
In the "Video Editing" course series, Digital Media Services will address beginning through intermediate and advanced operations in various video editing programs. This introduction to the course series, some similarities between editing programs are highlighted.

V151: iMovie 
In the "iMovie" course, Digital Media Services will address adding titles, transitions, additional audio, trimming video and saving your project on an external drive through screencasts demonstrating each step of the process.
V152: Beginning and Intermediate Final Cut Pro 7 
In the "Beginning and Intermediate Final Cut Pro 7" course, Digital Media Services will address adding titles, transitions and additional audio, using In and Out points and cutting video through screencasts demonstrating each step of the process.
V153: Advanced Final Cut Pro 7
In the "Advanced Final Cut Pro 7" course, Digital Media Services will address adjusting audio levels with the sound mixer, color correction and overlaying videos by using green screens and keying through screencasts demonstrating each step of the process.
V154: Beginning and Intermediate Adobe Premiere 5.5 
In the "Beginning and Intermediate Adobe Premiere 5.5" course, Digital Media Services will address adding titles, transitions and additional audio, using In and Out points and cutting video through screencasts demonstrating each step of the process.
V155: Advanced Adobe Premiere 5.5
In the "Advanced Premiere 5.5" course, Digital Media Services will address adjusting audio levels with the sound mixer, color correction and overlaying videos by using green screens and keying through screencasts demonstrating each step of the process.
V156: Beginning and Intermediate Final Cut Pro X 
In the "Beginning and Intermediate Final Cut Pro X" course, Digital Media Services will address adding titles, transitions and additional audio, using In and Out points and cutting video through screencasts demonstrating each step of the process.
V157: Advanced Final Cut Pro X
In the "Advanced Final Cut Pro X" course, Digital Media Services will address adjusting audio levels with the sound mixer, color correction and overlaying videos by using green screens and keying through screencasts demonstrating each step of the process.
V160: Sharing Video 
In the "Sharing Video" course, Digital Media Services will address sharing your finished product online or by using physical media, as well as tips on tagging, optimizing viewer potential and copyright care.
V190: Capstone 
In the "Capstone" course series, Digital Media Services will address applying all of the skills detailed throughout the course in a single project that falls into one of the following major categories. This introduction to the series details what is expected of each participant who wants one of the fantastic DMS Video Comptetency Badges!
V191: Broadcast 
In the "Broadcast" course, Digital Media Services will address the particulars of shooting for broadcast, including special terms like CG and b-roll and additional steps that may be added to pre and post-production.
V192: Commercials
In the "Commercials" course, Digital Media Services will address special considerations that arise when shooting a commercial, such as timing, message, and audience demographic.
V193: Documentary
In the "Documentary" course, Digital Media Services will address what makes documentaries different from other forms of video production, such as researching and capturing the intended message while a story is unfolding during production.
V194: Film Making
In the "Film Making" course, Digital Media Services will address the particulars of shooting a film, from concept to release paying special attention to clarity in communication among cast and crew.
V195: Live Events
In the "Live Events" course, Digital Media Services will address the special considerations that need to be addressed when capturing a live event, such as a concert or party, special attention is paid to the logistics and making the most of each instant, because there won’t be any “do-overs.”
V196: Public Service Announcements
In the "Public Service Announcements" course, Digital Media Services will address what makes effective PSAs so difficult to write and produce.
