Immigrant Students National Position Paper


The Immigrant Students National Position paper is a three-year research project led by Fairfield University’s Center for Faith and Public Life, in collaboration with Santa Clara University and Loyola University Chicago’s Center for Urban Research & Learning (CURL) [insert link to CURL’s website]. It aims to survey the social and legal context and current practices and attitudes in American Jesuit institutions of higher education regarding undocumented students.  The study concerns itself with, among other things, structures that support or challenge the higher education of undocumented students; best practices and strategies for ensuring their eventual success; a potential collaborative model for helping students through their university years; and issues facing students after graduation. 

The project goals as outlined in the original proposal are as follows:

Goal 1: to provide presidential leadership in higher education regarding undocumented students;

Goal 2: to initiate and sustain a dialogue with the 28 North American Jesuit Colleges and Universities around the topic of undocumented students with a special focus on 6 schools;

Goal 3: to design and implement a mixed-methods research study to understand the legal contexts, attitudes, and current practices, issues, and challenges for AJCU institutions in serving students who are undocumented;

Goal 4: to develop and disseminate a white paper that provides a moral argument for serving students who are undocumented and highlights the results of the research study. 

Data collection took place from fall 2010- 2011, consisting of interviews with university staff and faculty, students, and a review of institutional documents.  The social research and legal research teams are analyzing data and compiling results, to be incorporated within a larger moral framework incorporating the Jesuit mission, to present to the Ford Foundation in the form of a White Paper (hard copy document).  Results of this project will be released in spring 2013.  

The project has obtained a Certificate of Confidentiality from the National Institute of Health.  A Certificate of Confidentiality helps researchers protect the privacy of human research participants enrolled in biomedical, behavioral, clinical and other forms of sensitive research.
