Welcome to Loyola University Chicago's Lakeside IRB's homepage.

The Lakeside Institutional Review Board is an administrative body established by the University to ensure the protection of the rights and welfare of human subjects who are recruited to participate in research activities sponsored by Loyola University Chicago.  Please review the University's Statement of Institutional Commitment to the Protection of Human Subjects. 

All research involving human subjects that is carried out by Loyola lakeside personnel must be submitted to the Lakeside IRB for review.  All research projects which will involve human subjects, whether funded or unfunded, must be submitted to the IRB for review.  Research conducted by an investigator affiliated with Loyola at an off-campus site(s) or in collaboration with an investigator at another institution must still be submitted to the Lakeside IRB.

The IRB reviews research projects through three different review mechanisms: Full Board review, Expedited review, and Exempt review.  Investigators can find instructions on how to submit proposals for IRB review in the "User Guides" accessible in CAP and throughout the online application by clicking on the "?" symbols in each section.  All required materials (consent forms, letters of cooperation, approved thesis ballots, etc) are to be provided by the PI in the Attachments section of the IRB application.  No hard copies of applications or accompanying materials should be submitted. If you need assistance completing the application or adding an attached file, please contact an IRB compliance assistant or send an email to irb@luc.edu. 

The IRB also grants Faculty and Course Instructors Assurances for Classroom Projects that involve human subjects for the purpose of teaching and training students in research.

Many projects which involve interactions with people do not meet LUC's definition of 'research with human subjects'.  For example, many evaluations and classroom projects do not require IRB Review.  For more information regarding what activities do not require IRB review, please review the IRB's Guidance on Determining Whether IRB Review is Required.
