GroupWise

Novell GroupWise is Loyola’s email system for faculty, students and staff. GroupWise is a comprehensive collaborative software product offering e-mail, calendaring, instant messaging, and task, contact and document management.

GroupWise has a client for Windows, a cross-platform client for Linux and Mac, as well as an excellent WebAccess client. Faculty and staff will access GroupWise using the GroupWise client installed on each computer or via the internet using GroupWise WebAccess. Students will access GroupWise only through WebAccess. The Office of Information Technology supports GroupWise and provides documentation and training on its use.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT GROUPWISE

E-Mail Retention
Faculty, staff and student accounts retain messages for 180 days after receipt.  All messages older than 180 days for faculty, staff or students are subject to deletion. This limitation pertains to ALL MAIL in the user's account, including messages in all folders, not just the Mailbox. Moving mail into the Cabinet or predefined folders will not protect the items from deletion.  More information can be found at: http://www.luc.edu/its/policy_email_retention.shtml.  You can also find FAQs about E-Mail retention here.

Email Account Size Limit
All faculty, staff, and student GroupWise email accounts have a size limit of 1GIG.  Faculty and staff who wish to keep mail older than the retention limit or in excess of the 1 GB size limit are encouraged to archive messages to a network drive.  Please call the Call Center if you need assistance with setting this up.  Students who need to retain messages are encouraged to save the messages to a personal disk.

Recovery
All GroupWise email servers are backed up on a daily basis and saved for three days.  The backups are for disaster recovery purposes.  All staff and faculty are encouraged to utilize their individual network space for archives, which are backed up.  Students are encouraged to save important emails to disk.
