J.D. Program
The curriculum leading to the J.D. degree enables students to develop not only the knowledge of substantive law but also the professional skills and values that are essential for the responsible practice of law. A required core curriculum and electives provide students with opportunities for concentration in their areas of interest as well as other courses that will enrich their educational experience.
The J.D. curriculum also prepares law graduates for practice in a world that is global and multicultural, and dependent on technology. The school's role in the larger university setting also allows its students to explore the function and impact of other disciplines on the legal system.
The full-time J.D. program can be completed in three academic years; the part-time program takes longer. A part-time student in good standing may apply to transfer to the full-time program after the first year and complete the degree requirements within three years. Full-time students are permitted to take elective courses in the evening, and part-time students may take elective courses in the day. After the first year, a student may transfer from one division of the School of Law to another with the dean's permission. A division transfer is permitted only once in a student's law school career.
