The Sujack Family: College of Arts and Sciences faculty research
In April, Loyola students, faculty, and administrators gathered on the Lake Shore Campus as the 2009 Edwin T. & Vivijeanne F. Sujack Awards for Teaching Excellence were presented. At the ceremony, Dean Frank Fennell also announced an exciting new gift from the Sujack family to support faculty research. Family members Donald, Greg, and Stephen Sujack, along with sister Julie (Sujack) Rosenberger, and their spouses, endowed the Sujack Family Faculty Research Fund with a $100,000 pledge.

"The Sujack family believes in the growth, development, and success of our professors," says Frank Fennell, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. "Their commitment to faculty has been and continues to be a highly esteemed honor by all who teach in the college." Funds from this endowment will help alleviate the expenses incurred by faculty members while they conduct the research that will enhance their own individual scholarship as well as the greater Loyola community.
"My dad started the Sujack awards 15 years ago," says Donald Sujack. "We saw how important it was to both my mom and dad. Seeing the effect the Sujack awards have had on the Loyola community makes us want to continue contributing. It's nice to give to an institution that has been and continues to be so important to our family."
The teaching awards, established in 1994, recognize two outstanding CAS teachers each year. The 2009 awards were given to Harveen Mann, PhD, associate professor of English, and George K. Thiruvathukal, PhD, associate professor of computer science. Both were nominated for the awards by students praising their remarkable teaching styles and accessibility to their students. Thus far, 32 members from 13 academic disciplines have been recognized.
